How is AI used in Technical Design - Architectural?

We encourage students to use AI as a resource while providing guidance on ethical and responsible use. As a student in our programme, you will have access to CoPilot as your official AI engine, helping you develop skills applicable to a variety of leading AI platforms.

You will gain insight into how AI is used in architectural design and related workflows, as well as an understanding of its opportunities, limitations, and practical applications. This will help you use AI responsibly and critically in both your studies and future professional practice.

How is AI used in the workplace as a technical drafter and CAD operator?

In the workplace, AI is primarily used as a support tool for tasks such as simple automation and basic assistance. It is important not to rely too heavily on AI, as accuracy and technical responsibility remain with you as a professional.

During your education, you will become familiar with the Autodesk family of products, software with broad adoption in the industry and a leader internationally. Their recently introduced AI tool ’Autodesk Assistant’, for example, is relatively new and not yet widely used in the industry, where strong fundamental skills and manual control remain essential.

Why Study Architectural Technical Design?

Architectural Technical Design is an exciting programme where you will gain insight into how to contribute to the production of drawings for residential and commercial buildings. This specialisation offers a unique opportunity to develop skills that encompass not only technical expertise but also a holistic approach to problem-solving.

Throughout your studies, you will learn how to visualise different types of buildings and place them in real-world contexts using coordinates. You will gain in-depth knowledge of relevant software and the producting presentation materials, which can later be used as part of a job application process, for example, in a portfolio.

Two-year programme also available

If you want to gain additional skills in areas such as project management, construction processes and conceptual modelling, you can apply directly to the second year of the two-year programme Technical Design - Building Information Modelling (BIM).

Programme information

The program introduces you to the fundamentals of producing documentation for the AEC (Architecture, Engineering, and Construction) industry. You will receive a thorough introduction to producing 2D and 3D documentation using modern, professional tools and techniques with specialised software.

You will learn how to contribute to the work leading to drawings and 3D models, anticipate challenges, and help solve potential problems. By the end of the program, you will be able to work closely with architects, engineers, and contractors to produce and deliver robust building drawings and models.

Upon graduation, you will be proficient with digital tools and familiar with common industry processes for producing technical documentation to meet various needs.

We recommend:

  • A Desktop PC or laptop that meets the minimum requirements for the course
  • Graphics Card: Dedicated graphics card 8 GB (Minimum: 4 GB)
  • RAM: 32 GB (Minimum: 16 GB)
  • Hard Drive: 1TB with dedicated available space (Minimum: 500 GB)
  • Microsoft(R) Windows(R) 10 or 11

We do not recommend that you use MAC OS. Even if there are compatible versions of the programs, there may be differences in commands and interfaces that are not covered in the course.If you are buying a new PC, we advise that you provide the software specifications for the required software to a professional to help you with the purchase.

We recommend this equipment:

  • At least one additional monitor to work more comfortably while following the study material.

Approximately NOK 1000 per year should be expected for optional study material or licenses. Free alternatives can be used in many cases but some paid versions have better capabilities.

Noroff has ongoing admissions, and applications are processed in the order they are received. The earlier you apply, the earlier you can secure a study place.

To qualify for the programme, you must have general study competence or vocational education with a professional certificate. It is also possible to apply based on recognised prior learning.

All our study programs are approved for loans and grants from the Norwegian State Educational Loan Fund (Lånekassen). You can apply to the Loan Fund for basic support (loan and grant; NOK 166.859) and tuition fees (NOK 79,432).

As an adult student, you can receive loans and grants from the State Educational Loan Fund. This also applies if you work while studying.

As a main rule, you must be a Norwegian citizen to receive support from the Norwegian State Educational Fund. However, foreign citizens may also be entitled to financial support. Check here to see if you are eligible.
