IT and technology specialists will have some of the most in-demand skills in the labor market in 2023. At the same time, there are not enough available study positions for everyone at public colleges and universities.
ong the fields of study with the strongest growth in recent years are IT and technology studies. According to Samordna Opptak, there were 7232 applicants with IT studies as their first choice in the main intake in 2023, and 14 603 applicants with technology subjects as their first choice. With a total of 9151 planned study positions, it will not be possible for everyone to get a spot at their first choice.
At the same time, a large part of the business community is experiencing an ever-increasing need for newly qualified IT specialists, and all indications are that this trend will continue for a long time. According to the NIFU report «IKT-sikkerhetskompetanse i arbeidslivet – kompetanse og tilbud» , four out of ten IT jobs will be unfilled in 2030 if no action is taken.
– Traditional education is simply not fast enough. At Noroff, we see it as our social mission to ensure that businesses get the skills they need to keep up with the digital shift. That's why we offer IT studies at vocational school, university college and as short courses, says Aage Alexander Foss, Rector of Noroff Fagskole.
Several thousand positions in IT and technology are advertised throughout the year. This means there are good job opportunities for those who choose an IT education.

– More and more dependent on technology
Norway is considered one of the most digitalized countries in the world, and the pandemic has led to increased digitalization and increased investment in the IT industry. This has led to an elevated need for knowledge within technology. More companies have discovered and embraced digital solutions, and the need for specialists in cyber security, digital forensics and data analysis has increased significantly.
– We are becoming more and more dependent on technology and have more of it around us than ever before. That's why we need more people who can develop and manage these solutions. IT and technology are therefore among the safest study program choices today, and IT specialists are among the most in-demand employees in today's and tomorrow's job market, Foss explains.
The most in-demand skills
LinkedIn annually identifies the most in-demand skills in the labor market. In recent years, IT specialists have ranked very high, and the 2023 report shows no change in this. In particular, software developers and specialists in JavaScript and Python are highly sought after in the labor market in 2023.
– We educate employees for tomorrow's labor market. The goal is for our students to be able to go straight into work after completing their studies, Foss says.
Noroff offers exciting technology studies aimed at tomorrow's labor market. You can choose between a three-year bachelor's degree or a shorter vocational school education. In addition, the studies are offered as online studies.
All studies are approved for loans and grants from the Norwegian State Educational Loan Fund.
