The government proposes to raise the status of vocational school students by giving them the same rights as students at universities and colleges.
Many wishes a higher education without becoming an academic.Torbjørn Røe Isaksen, Minister of Education (H)
This was reported by the Ministry of Education.
- The vocational schools can be more visible and gain a higher status by being treated equally as universities and colleges, says the Minister of Education in Norway, Torbjørn Røe Isaksen (H) to NTB/Klassekampen. – Many wishes a higher education without becoming an academic. We also see the need for retraining, now that unemployment has increased and jobs disappear, for example in the oil industry. Vocational schools are part of the solution to all these challenges.
Isaksen thinks that vocational education is not known well enough among the general public. He suggests that students at vocational schools should have the same rights and obligations as students in other areas of higher education.
The Ministry of Education recently reported that more students now choose a vocational education, and that 5500 students completed a vocational study program in 2014. Vocational study programs are approved by NOKUT (the Norwegian Agency for Quality Assurance in Education), and eligible for loans and grants from the State Educational Loan Fund (Lånekassen).
