Stress can actually be a good thing. How, you ask? It can sharpen your senses and make you perform at your best.
Student life can be stressful at times. Stress is a term we humans use a lot. We often associate it with having a lot to do or think about - something you'll definitely experience as a student 📚
Stress occurs when you feel that demands and expectations exceed your own capacity.
Too much stress over a long period can lead to health problems. Short-term stress related to exams or deadlines won't make you sick but will rather ensure that you sharpen your senses and perform better. Healthy stress actually prepares the body for the extra work a challenging situation demands.
Here are seven tips on how you can easily reduce stress as a student.
1. Create a Time Budget
The more control you feel, the greater demands you can handle. You can save a lot of time with efficient planning and realistic goals. Many students set up weekly work plans and follow them rigorously. The most important thing is to figure out what works best for you. Also, include close relationships in your time budget. Experiences that provide meaning, well-being, comfort, and mastery can be the sustenance you need during certain periods.
2. Concentration and Focus
Put away devices that disturb your efficiency when you've dedicated time to studying. By incorporating good work habits, like focusing on one thing, you'll find it easier to complete your daily tasks. Perhaps you're one of those who enjoy interval work - studying for twenty minutes and then taking a well-deserved five-minute break?
3. Learn Some Form of Mental Relaxation
You can do yourself a great favor by adopting new ways of thinking. Headspace offers a free ten-day program where you spend ten minutes each day on specific meditation exercises. Definitely worth checking out!
4. Physical Activity
Physical activity increases the secretion of endorphins, which in turn gives a feeling of happiness and euphoria. Swedish researchers have found (bear with us in this little nerdy part): when muscles are active, the blood is purified of a substance formed during stress - which is harmful to the brain. Active muscles produce an enzyme that cleanses the body of harmful substances. So, muscle function in this context is similar to the function of kidneys or liver. Fantastic, isn't it?
5. Sleep, Sleep, and More Sleep 💭
There's a lot behind the phrase: "Sleep on it." Lack of sleep leads to lack of concentration and weakens the ability to learn. Get those extra two hours of sleep your body needs. Maybe you have to watch one less episode of your favorite Netflix series in the evening - you'll gain a lot from it anyway.
6. Find Inspiration Wherever You Can
Not everyone is meant to sit in school on study days. Libraries are full of literature and opportunities to meet other students. Or bring a blanket and make use of the city's park areas. Perhaps that's where you'll find inspiration to start an assignment?
7. Nutrition
Nuts, apples, bananas, carrots, sandwiches, crispbreads, and tube-based spreads. Snacking is the keyword during the periods when school feels like your new home. And, by all means, don't forget the water bottle and a pot of coffee.
By thinking this way, you make conscious choices that increase your sense of control in life and lower your stress levels! Good luck!
