NHO's Competence Barometer 2022 shows that 1 out of 2 companies require employees with vocational education.
NHO's annual Competence Barometer assesses the competency needs among Norwegian businesses. The survey from last year, recently published, reveals that 53 percent of companies are seeking employees with vocational education.
The percentage of companies in need of vocational education in 2022 remains similar to last year's survey (54 percent).
– Noroff is an educational institution that effectively addresses the competency gap. Our role is to provide relevant vocational education that the workforce truly needs, says Aage Alexander Foss, the rector at Noroff Vocational School.
Noroff offers 17 vocational education programs in technology and digital media. Learn more about vocational education and explore the full range of programs offered by Noroff here.
Unmet Competency Needs in the Industry
Today, thousands of students are graduating in IT annually without attending university or pursuing a Ph.D. They attend vocational schools and directly enter the workforce.Aage Alexander Foss
According to NHO's Competence Barometer 2022, vocational education is the second most sought-after level of education, following high school education with vocational programs.
Around 45 percent of companies also state that they have an unmet demand for ICT (Information and Communication Technology), with 10 percent experiencing a significant need. This particularly applies to competencies related to digital communication and collaboration platforms, digital security, and administrative tasks.
– Today, thousands of students are graduating in IT annually without attending university or pursuing a Ph.D. They attend vocational schools and directly enter the workforce, says Foss.
He mentions that Noroff currently has over 1500 students specializing in IT security, with plans to increase by more than 500 study positions in IT and IT security each year.
– As Norway's largest vocational school, Noroff, in collaboration with the higher vocational education sector (HYU), provides students with competencies that match the industry's needs at the pace those needs arise, often much faster than universities and colleges can manage, says Aage.
Aage emphasizes the urgent need for digital expertise. In NHO's Competence Barometer, about half of the member companies report a shortage of ICT competencies right now, and this gap continues to widen.
– The thousands of students graduating from higher vocational education every year, who can enter the workforce without additional training, are essential to building the future of Norway in a digital world, concludes the vocational school director at Noroff.
