– I like the idea of working in a field where the goal is to be one step ahead of the criminals, digital forensics student Lorena Carthy says.
– I really like it here. I enjoy the concept of the school and I like the teachers. You can tell they have been working in the field for a long time, Lorena Carthy says.
Lorena is a first year bachelor student in the Digital Forensics program. She is from Peru, and has lived in Norway for two years. After first living in Kristiansund she moved to Kristiansand for the degree.
– Girls should not be scared of technology
Lorena's hope for program – and for the field of technology – is that more girls get involved:
– There is definitely a lack of girls in the field. I hope I can be a role model and inspiration to other girls. I find that most girls are scared of technology.

– No, girls should not be scared of technology!

– There are movements to invite more girls to study or work within the different fields within technology. It is exiting to be a part of it. You can wear high heels and still work with coding. You can even catch bad guys, while wearing heels, Lorena says.
– IT is about solving issues. Girls can do that just as good as boys, if not better.

– Why did you want to study Digital Forensics?

– What kind of career are you pursuing?
– I would like to work with local police as a digital investigator and do what I can to help the community. Hopefully I get to work on investigations and exam crime scenes. There are also plenty of opportunities in computer security for the private sector. I might end up working to prevent phishing scams or with bank security.
– Are you worried about the fact that you will be fighting real criminals?
– Yes, of course. I'm worried about the crimes they are committing. It is not just theft. The content of the data you might find might be sickening. That is why it is so important to fight it. I'll have to find a way to separate work from personal feelings.
– Hacking can be used for good
Lorena also hopes to educate people in regards to security threats:
– The older generation is particularly vulnerable. Not being digital natives makes them easier to scam. I want to help them and protect them.
– Is it true you learn hacking in school?
– It is, yes. Hacking is usually perceived as a negative term, but hacking can be used for good. You can hack into your own computer, or hack to recover lost data on a hard drive. That is exciting, I really enjoy it.

Lorena invites people who have lost data on hard drives to reach out. She and her students might be able to help recover lost files:
– It is good practice for us to try and recover lost files on a hard drive or USB stick. We may be able to help pro bono.
– Do you have any advice to girls?
– Yes, they should learn that there are options to study or work within IT and technology. Everything today is influenced by technology. It is smart to learn some coding and work with programming. Remember, all your favorite apps and software were made with coding.
