Beate Nilsen (30) never thought she would end up studying in Norway. But through Online PLUS, she has now discovered her passion for technology and investigation.

Originally, Beate Nilsen studied law and business at the Riga Graduate School of Law, but life took a different turn when she moved to Norway. After having children and completing a degree during the pandemic, she discovered a completely new area of interest.

- After I started exploring new fields of study, I felt that Digital Forensics was something that really captured my interest. It’s a perfect combination of technology, investigation, and the legal system.

From Dream to Reality

Beate realizes she would never have been able to pursue a long career in law in Norway, as it would have required several years of Norwegian language courses followed by a master’s degree. After considering various options, she found Digital Forensics, which she saw as the perfect solution.

- When I found the program, I immediately thought: ‘This is it!’ It was exactly what I had been looking for – a career that combines my background and interest in law, technology, and investigation.

The Hidden Evidence

Digital Forensics is a constantly evolving field, and Beate is particularly fascinated by how technology can uncover hidden evidence.

- What fascinates me the most is how you can find hidden information and evidence through digital investigations. It requires both creativity and great attention to detail – while following strict procedures, explains Beate.

- I’m still in the phase where everything seems exciting, and I look to the future with great enthusiasm. Digital Forensics is such a new and dynamic field, and it gives me the opportunity to reach career goals I never imagined.

A Beneficial Background in Law and Business

Beate’s previous studies in law and business have proven to be very useful in her new career path. Experts in digital forensics often serve as expert witnesses in court, and it’s important to be able to explain digital evidence in a way that is understandable to judges and lawyers.

- My background in law has definitely helped me, especially when it comes to explaining digital evidence in a legal context. Additionally, my business background has been useful for project management and making strategic decisions during investigations, says Beate.

Flexibility Combined with Physical Learning

Beate is part of Noroff’s Online PLUS study program in Bergen, which gives her the opportunity to study Digital Forensics in a flexible way, while also having access to the physical learning environment on campus. This unique solution allows her to balance her studies with her family life, and she can choose how to organize her daily routine.

- As an Online PLUS student, I can combine the flexibility of online studies with the opportunity to participate in group work and discussions on campus in Bergen when it suits me. It gives me the best of both worlds, says Beate.

Through Online PLUS, Beate has access to all campus facilities, such as group rooms, lab spaces, and social areas, as well as the chance to attend industry events that provide valuable networking opportunities. This allows her to be part of a physical student environment while also enjoying the freedom to study when and where it fits best in her busy life.

- The flexibility that Online PLUS provides has been crucial for me. I can use the campus when I need it, but also follow the lessons from home when the kids are at daycare. It gives me the perfect balance between studies, work, and family life, says Beate.

How Beate Balances Studies, Family, and Everyday Demands

Although Beate has found a good balance, it’s not always easy. The biggest challenge has been balancing the technical demands of her studies with family life.

- The hardest part has been balancing the technical depth of the courses with family life. But I’ve learned to be patient and plan well. Sometimes things don’t go as planned, and that’s when you have to be flexible. I’ve realized that it’s important to accept that not everything will be perfect all the time.

Career Ambitions and Future Goals

Beate sees several career opportunities after completing her studies, and she has big ambitions.

- I envision working in digital forensics, either in the judicial system or in a cybersecurity team.

- I want to contribute to shaping best practices in the field and help more women enter such an exciting and challenging profession, concludes Beate.
