Stian Skaanes (37) is an online student, full-time employee and father of three: - Online studies give me the freedom to study when it suits me and my surroundings.
Stian is currently studying Network and IT Security at Noroff online studies.
His daily academic life is characterized by routines, which is necessary to juggle a full-time job, studies and three daughters aged five to ten..
– I do my schoolwork Monday to Thursday, so I'm usually finished by the weekend and can do extra reading or immerse myself in the necessary topics. Most of the time, I still prioritize being present for my family on weekends, says the online student.
Talented lecturers
Network and IT Security is a practical IT education that teaches you how to combat hacking and cybercrime. The acute need for IT security expertise provides solid job opportunities after the completion of the program.
The course is suitable for anyone who wants to learn the subject.Stian Skaanes
Stian finds that the program provides a basic understanding and knowledge of what seem to be very professionally relevant tasks.
– The course is suitable for anyone who wants to learn the subject. You can approach this field from any angle without any specific basic knowledge and start from scratch, but it helps if you have a genuine interest and desire to get stuck in. If you meet these criteria, you'll go far, he says.
He says that the lecturers are talented people who have a lot of expertise and are good at communicating, visualizing and practicing good teaching.
– There is a low threshold for asking questions, they seem to wish everyone well and do their best to help everyone achieve their goals.
Keeping children safe online
The IT student says that the most interesting thing he has learned so far through his courses is about networks, where he has acquired knowledge about network configuration, among other things. He has already put this knowledge to use in his own home.
– We now live with a fully segmented network at home with separate networks for the household's adult users, children, IoT devices and guests. The different networks strengthen our security every day, says Stian.
Be active in social channels and the digital classroom.Stian Skaanes
He explains that the children's network is based on their mobile devices, where content filtering has been set up and unwanted apps and services have been blocked. Securing children and other non-technical people's digital lives was one of the topics that drew the 37-year-old to study network and IT security.
Stian hasn't quite decided what he wants to do when he graduates from Noroff, but he is passionate about IT security, so he would like to work in this field.
– What advice would you give to new students?
– Be active in the social channels and the digital classroom. Ask more than what you think is within your scope, especially in the beginning. Few people have much experience of studying online and finding out how everything works to create good routines is a good start. There is a lot of help in both teachers and students who have been there longer, he concludes.
The Network and IT Security program is available in Oslo, Bergen, Stavanger and as online studies. You can still secure your place for the start in August.
