Through her studies, the 22-year-old got her first client assignment, and since then, more have followed. Her dream is to work as a freelance graphic designer.

Nele Nami Regenbrecht is studying graphic design in her second year in Bergen. The 22-year-old comes from the small village of Sykkylven and wanted to move to a city for new experiences and inspiration. She explains that Noroff was one of the few schools offering a graphic design program on campus.

- I worked for two years after high school and wasn’t sure what I wanted to study. When I came across the graphic design program, I thought it was perfect for me because I enjoy being creative and having a varied daily routine, she says.

Nele describes the learning environment on the Bergen campus as very positive. She also finds the program enjoyable and has learned about many exciting topics in graphic design. So far, she has worked on various tasks and collaborated with students from other Noroff programs.

- Through the program, I've met many new people from different fields of study. This has expanded my network, which is extremely important in a profession like graphic design, she explains.

She believes that students have a certain responsibility for their own learning, which is why she has also worked a lot with the software and graphic projects in her spare time to develop her skills.

- It’s definitely important to be motivated to learn on your own. I’m really excited to use the knowledge I’ve gained in the professional world.

Client assignments

Through her studies, Nele got the opportunity to create a visual identity for her first client, an online toy store called «Lek for lite».

It was a very educational process to work with a real client. Nele Nami Regenbrecht

- It was a very educational process to work with a real client. I created a complete visual identity for them and their brand. It was my first client relationship, where I gained experience in client communication, she says.

The efforts in both her studies and her spare time have paid off, as this was not the last customer assignment for the Noroff student. So far, she has worked on several projects outside of school. She has, for example, designed a logo and color palette for a personal trainer, as well as a visual identity for her mother’s company «Resone». This summer, she also received an assignment from the student culture house in Bergen, Kvarteret.

- The student house has something called «Sommerkvarteret». It's a summer event with regular activities for students every week. I got to design the logo, as well as banners and posters to promote the concept, she explains.

Recently, Nele joined a student company called «Norcode SB» where she has the role as graphic designer. She also has her own brand called «Namidesign», for which she has created a visual identity and an Instagram profile. Her plan is to start her own business by the end of the year.

Students get insights into the industry

During her studies, Nele has already gained insights into the industry and the opportunities available as a graphic designer.

What I dream of when I finish my studies is to start freelancing. Nele Nami Regenbrecht

- So far, we have visited digital marketing agencies, printing companies, and soon we will visit a design firm. I’m really looking forward to seeing what it's like to work there.

- What skills have you developed that you think will be most valuable in the professional world?

- Some of the skills I've developed during my studies include the ability to be creative and let go a bit more when it comes to design. I’ve learned to create things that stand out. What I particularly enjoy is working in Illustrator, and I find it exciting to see my designs come to life. Additionally, I’ve gained valuable experience in collaborating with others, such as clients and partners, she responds.

Nele explains that the program has also given her more confidence to take risks and showcase her work, and she has grown to love sharing her creations on platforms like LinkedIn and Instagram. She finds this useful, as it allows her to receive constructive feedback and create more opportunities for herself.

- What I dream of when I finish my studies is to start freelancing, so I can travel abroad while working on what I love. I also really want to work at a top advertising agency, where I can learn a lot and meet many new people, she concludes.
