Gerhard is an experienced educator in introductory programming, computer fundamentals, and cybersecurity. He has taught across secondary and higher education institutions in South Africa, Ukraine, and Norway, working with students from a wide range of ages, cultures, and educational backgrounds.
His approach to teaching focuses on developing critical thinking, curiosity, practical problem-solving skills, and helping students identify and develop their own areas of interest.
Gerhard holds a Bachelor of Technology and a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE), with a focus on Information Technology and Mathematical Literacy. He has also completed a Master’s degree in Cyber Security at Leeds Beckett University.
During his Bachelor’s studies, Gerhard worked at Nelson Mandela University (NMU), where he supported students in programming and computer fundamentals.
Research Interests
Gerhard’s interests include the use of game engines and virtual environments for teaching, learning, and simulation. His previous research explored the use of game engines to develop interactive applications for controlling remote-controlled LEGO robots and visualising sensor data within simulated hazardous environments.
He is particularly interested in the development of practical cybersecurity skills through interactive and virtual learning environments, including Capture the Flag (CTF) exercises, web-based challenges, and other hands-on approaches that allow students to apply theoretical knowledge in realistic scenarios.
