- Being proactive and showing enthusiasm has probably been the key to securing a job that wasn’t even advertised in my case.

Kristine Andersen chose Graphic Design because she wanted to explore a creative career path.

I didn’t know exactly what the Graphic Design program entailed when I applied, but the idea of being able to express myself creatively while also working with people sounded like an exciting direction to take, she says.

A Great Learning Environment

Graphic Design is a hands-on education where you learn to work creatively and strategically with visual communication. You get to apply your skills in real-world projects, preparing you to enter the workforce directly.

The program has been incredibly rewarding and fun. I have learned a lot, especially about using advanced design software and different approaches to the design process. But also about presenting my work, which I didn’t expect to be such a valuable learning experience. It has helped me gain experience in explaining my design choices and getting used to receiving feedback, both positive and constructive, says Kristine.

She studies at the Kristiansand campus and describes the learning environment as excellent. As part of a small class, she has gotten to know both her fellow students and her lecturer well.

This has probably contributed to creating a safe and open environment in the class, where there are no stupid questions. Being able to rely on each other when we have such different skills has also been amazing, as we can contribute to each other’s learning, she explains.

Working as a Graphic Designer and SoMe Manager

Kristine finds that the connection between the program and the industry has been strong, giving her a solid understanding of what is required in the field. She is in the final part of her second year of studies and has already secured a job as a graphic designer and social media manager at Mur i Sør, a Southern Norway-based construction and real estate development company.

My brother works at Mur i Sør, and based on what he told me, it seemed like an incredibly interesting place to work. There was no job posting, so I chose to show them what I could offer and what I wanted to contribute. Being proactive and showing enthusiasm has probably been the key to securing a job that wasn’t even advertised.

Kristine describes her workday at Mur i Sør as varied and exciting. She spends a lot of time in front of her computer, designing ads and brochures for both print and digital use. At the same time, she also visits construction sites and properties that are being sold to take photos and create content for social media.

This variety makes each day unique and challenging in its own way, she says.

Valuable Experience

Kristine shares that balancing work and studies can sometimes be challenging, but it has also provided her with valuable experience and the opportunity to see how real working life functions.

I use a lot of what I have learned in the program in my job.Kristine Andersen

I use a lot of what I have learned in the program in my job at Mur i Sør. The same design software and approaches we have been taught are used in practice every day. Even though the transition to working life can be overwhelming, I feel quite prepared to take on the different tasks that come my way.

She continues:

I know that the road ahead will involve a lot of learning and development, and I look forward to continuing to grow as a graphic designer. I am incredibly grateful to have this job opportunity and look forward to learning as much as possible in a forward-thinking company like Mur i Sør.
