For Mikkel Flesjaa, the journey started with a curiosity for design. This interest took him to the other side of the world, where he completed a bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design at Deakin University in Australia, after two years at Noroff.
From general studies to design studies at Noroff
The path into Graphic Design was not completely straightforward. Mikkel studied general academic subjects in high school, and it was not until his final year that he became interested in design. He spent a gap year exploring design-related software and visual creativity. That was when he discovered Noroff.
– When I came across Noroff and saw that they had a study programme that fit perfectly, the choice was easy. It was a local vocational school with a focus on practical learning – exactly what I needed.
A safe and rewarding environment in Stavanger
Mikkel chose to study Graphic Design at Noroff in Stavanger. His two years there were filled with practical work, close follow-up, and a strong academic and social community. The teachers were highly skilled and always available for help, and with a class of only 14 students it was easy to build friendships. The sense of community was strong, and Mikkel still keeps in touch with several of his fellow students today.
Among the highlights, he mentions the study trip to Berlin:
– It was both inspiring and incredibly fun.
Noroff had prepared us well, and the technical foundation we brought with us made the transition both safe and exciting. Mikkel Flesjaa
From Noroff to Deakin University in Melbourne
The dream of studying abroad was sparked during an open day, when Noroff presented the 2+1 agreement and its international partners. He thought that if he was going to study abroad, he might as well go “all in”.
– Australia seemed exciting and a bit scary, but mostly motivating. It was a chance to grow, both academically and personally.

Academic development in Melbourne
He explains that the transition from vocational school in Norway to university in Australia was both challenging and educational. The students from Noroff had a solid technical foundation, were confident with the software, and had a good understanding of design. At Deakin, however, they had to take it a step further, with more theory and academic reasoning behind their design choices. This combination has made him a more reflective designer.
It’s easy to thrive in Melbourne! The city is friendly, creative, and full of inspiration. Mikkel Flesjaa
An international student life
Everyday life in Australia offered new structure and an exciting diversity. He started his day by taking the tram to campus, followed by lectures or workshops of two to three hours. The rest of the day was spent working on projects, which were often larger semester assignments that required both structure and steady effort.
He especially highlights the social environment as a positive surprise:
– I’ve met people from all over the world, and many of those friendships still last. Melbourne is a fantastic city to study in. The city is vibrant, creative, and full of inspiration.
Advice for those considering exchange
For others considering the 2+1 pathway at Noroff or a bachelor’s degree abroad, Mikkel has a clear recommendation:
– Just do it. You will grow so much, both as a designer and as a person. And don’t be afraid to get to know new people. Most international students are there alone and want the same thing as you: to build friendships and networks.
