After ten years in the tattoo industry, Birna Døgg Ingudottir felt the need for a change, and to reconnect with the joy of creating. Enrolling in 3D at Noroff marked the beginning of an entirely new creative direction.
A former colleague had started studying 3D at Noroff, and it sparked something in Birna.
- I was incredibly inspired by her. I’ve always been fascinated by animated films, and it’s been a lifelong dream to work in animation or games. So I took the chance, and I haven’t regretted it for a second.
She has studied 3D Design and Game Technology – Content Creation.
From Pencil to 3D Model
Birna grew up surrounded by art, with an artist mother and a strong interest in drawing throughout her teens. Still, the world of 3D was completely new to her when she began.
- I knew nothing about 3D. It felt like starting entirely from scratch. But I was quickly captivated by the process, especially organic sculpting in ZBrush, which has been absolutely magical.
A Flexible Study Life at Her Own Pace
After an intense first year of full-time studies, Birna decided to switch to part-time in her second year.
- I wanted the time to dive deeper into the subjects. One of Noroff’s biggest strengths is the flexibility to study in the way that suits you best.
A self-proclaimed night owl, she describes the study format as ideal.
- I can study whenever inspiration hits—even at two in the morning. And being able to work in my pajamas is definitely a bonus, she says with a smile.
Community and Support—Even Online
Even as an online student, Birna experiences a strong academic and social environment. The instructors are engaged and accessible, and the Discord channels work as a gathering place for collaboration and support.
- We’re always helping each other. Sometimes we meet up for coffee; other times we work together digitally. It truly feels like a real community.
She also explains that Noroff places great emphasis on student development through portfolio building, project support, and internship opportunities.
- I even got to adapt one of my modules so I could work on a game project alongside my studies. That boosted my motivation enormously.
Turning a Dream Into Direction
Birna dreams of a creative career, ideally in character sculpting or animation, but most of all, she wants to be in a creative environment.
- The most important thing is being able to create. Whether that’s in games, animation, or my own projects doesn’t matter, as long as I’m creating.
Over the course of her studies, she has grown not only professionally but personally.
- You don’t just learn 3D. You learn patience, structure, planning, and how to dare to show your work.
Advice for New Students
For anyone considering the program, Birna has clear and encouraging advice:
- It doesn’t matter where you are in life. If you’re curious and want to learn something new, just do it. It takes time and effort, but it’s so worth it. Even if it ends up as a hobby, you’ve gained something valuable. YOLO!
She also encourages students to use the forums and available resources:
- Don’t be afraid to ask questions or share your work. You don’t need any prior knowledge, though some basic drawing understanding helps. And remember: you’re never alone in this community.
