After eight years as a physiotherapist, Nino Sahinagic decided to change career path. He is now studying Cyber Security at Noroff University College – and has already secured a part-time job in the industry.
Nino Sahinagic is in his second year of the Cyber Security programme at Noroff University College, and is a great example of how it’s possible to retrain and quickly transition into relevant work.
– I worked as a physiotherapist for eight years, but eventually felt it was time for a change. I considered several directions, but ended up choosing IT – and especially security, he explains.
His decision comes at a time when demand for cyber security expertise is rapidly growing. As society becomes increasingly digital, everything from healthcare systems to power grids is vulnerable to cyber threats, and the need for professionals who can protect systems and data continues to rise.
– It opens up a lot of opportunities. For example, the option to work remotely, which I find very appealing. At the same time, it’s about protecting valuable data, which I find both meaningful and exciting.
Secured a part-time job through networking
Nino got his first introduction to the industry even before starting his studies.
– I participated in a Capture The Flag (CTF) at Noroff, where I met students who were already working part-time at Netsecurity. That’s when I realised it was actually possible to get relevant work alongside your studies.
That connection proved to be a turning point.
– I was actually headhunted. They had received recommendations about me and reached out, which led to me accepting a part-time position at NetSecurity.
Netsecurity is a Norwegian cyber security company that helps organisations protect themselves against digital threats. The company provides services such as security monitoring, incident response and advisory, supporting both private and public organisations in detecting and handling cyber attacks.
Several Noroff students have secured career opportunities with NetSecurity, highlighting the strong connection between the programme and the industry.
– They are very proactive, which is incredibly positive for us as students. It gives us the chance to gain relevant experience early on.
He also emphasises how actively the industry is looking for students.
– They’re really engaged, and that’s a huge advantage for us.
Balancing studies, work and family life
Alongside his studies and part-time job, Nino also has a busy life at home.
– I have an 11-month-old daughter who was born during my studies. It can be challenging to balance everything, but it’s definitely manageable.
Structure and commitment are key.
– If you stay on top of your assignments and manage your time well, it works out. The teachers are also very supportive, and we have plenty of time for independent study between lectures.
The programme is offered as online studies and Online+, making it easier to tailor your studies to your personal situation.
“Networking is essential”
Nino is clear about what it takes to succeed.
– Networking is incredibly important. You have to put yourself out there and be proactive. Employers notice those who go the extra mile.
He also recommends specialising within the field.
– Try to focus on a specific area. Think about what you want to work with within cyber security – it makes it easier to stand out.
He also points out the strong demand in the industry.
– There is a real need for people with security expertise, especially those with specialised knowledge.
Cyber security is not just about technology, but about protecting people, values and critical infrastructure – making it both an important and meaningful field to work in.
Working with real-world challenges
Through his studies, Nino has already gained insight into working in the industry.
– For example, we worked on a governance, risk and compliance project for a real client, where we got to take on the role of security consultants. It gives you a very realistic understanding of what working life is like.
He has also been active outside of his studies.
– I’ve volunteered at BSides Kristiansand and Techpoint. It has given me great opportunities to build my network.
The programme is designed to provide hands-on experience with real-world challenges, ensuring that students are well prepared for working life even before they graduate.
A flexible study experience
As a campus student in Kristiansand, Nino values the flexibility of the programme.
– I can study both from home and on campus. That’s especially important now that I have a family.
He also highlights the lecturers as a key strength.
– We have lecturers with PhDs and strong research backgrounds, as well as teachers with practical industry experience. It’s a very valuable combination.
– They are great at guiding us and helping us move in the right direction.
Three areas within cyber security
Nino explains that the programme covers several areas of security.
– You learn both offensive security, which involves ethical hacking and testing systems, and defensive security, where you focus on monitoring and protecting systems.
Students also gain insight into the strategic side of the field.
– This includes advisory work, regulations and risk assessment. You work on a higher level, helping organisations ensure they comply with laws and requirements, such as GDPR.
This breadth of knowledge opens up multiple career paths after graduation.
A message for those considering the programme
For those considering studying cyber security, Nino has a clear message.
– It’s challenging, especially if you don’t have an IT background, like me. But if you put in the effort and use your time well, you’ll succeed.
He emphasises that the experience is worth it.
– You graduate with skills that prepare you for working life.
